This is a video review for the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx handheld GPS unit and how to use it for geocaching. The review covers key features of this Garmin unit and how it works particularly well with the geocaching.com site to download caches directly to the eTrex. It also shows you the eTrex in action while hunting for a geocache. Lastly, I give my likes and dislikes as well as give you a list of what’s in the box.

The first handheld outdoor navigator with convenient touchscreen operation! Following on the tremendous popularity of the Colorado line of handheld navigators, Garmin has done one better with the debut of the Oregon Series, the first handheld navigators to feature convenient touchscreen operation. Combine that with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and wireless technology and you have the most advanced outdoor navigator yet! Outstanding features include an antenna that is completely internal, making the Oregon easy to slip into your pocket. Each Oregon includes an electronic compass, barometric altimeter,* 65000-color, sunlight-readable touchscreen, plus the ability to wirelessly exchange user routes, tracks, waypoints and geographic locations with other buddy units. Wireless capability also gives you the ability to use a heart-rate monitor or connect to a GSC10 Bike Speed/Cadence Sensor (sensors sold separately) for the ultimate in “inner” and “outer” situational awareness! The Oregon 200 comes preloaded with a worldwide base map, while the 300 offers the same map with shaded relief for superior detail. Saltwater mariners love the 400c with its preloaded, detailed BlueChart g2 coverage for the coastal US and the Bahamas. Preloaded with inland lakes, rivers and shoreline detail, the 400i is your all-purpose guide to inland water adventures. With state-of-the-art 3-D elevation perspective and preloaded topographic maps, the rugged 400t gives you all you need for serious

  5. @TheFugiapple12 Look on ebay ! Spread the word better prices on everything , and please boycott Best Buy!!!!!!!!!!! What ever you find in there worth buying take a second look on ebay befor buying it , you’ll find it for less than half the price.

  6. @scream412001You should look on ebay ,fuck all those electronic stores they are ripping everyone off. I had to learn the hard way, ebay is putting everybody out of buissness, because of one reason only. BETTER PRICE$’S. P.S. fuck Best Buy especially.

  7. @TheFugiapple12 i went to the other store they were about 200 to 300 bucks for the good ones.

  8. @cheapgeek1 while I’m looking at picking up this Vista or the Venture, there is a great app for the Android phones called c:geo that makes the GPS a lot more usable for geocaching. It’s still no replacement for a dedicated GPS unit, but we have had complete success with the app so far.

  9. What a cool thing to do with the kids. I will be going to Uganda soon and Im looking for a hand held for there will this one do it ? looks like an easy to learn unit. Thanks

  10. how much would this be?

  11. Good video!….I started doing Geocaching with my girlfriend.. We’ve been using phone Gps’s. (Android and Iphone) Not very accurate..Handheld is the way to go, evidently. I did document our first find on Youtube.. Thanks for the review, I’ve been looking at this model series..Thanks

I’m in the market for a handheld, saw some good articles on gpssatnavreviews (.) com

  13. @Iwiehavo Yes. “Units” in the setup menu, and select metric vice statute

  14. YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHH southrn minnesota baby thats what im talkin about!!!!!!

  15. I still find it amazing that this is now so much easier with an iPhone, I can do a search for nearby caches, log visits, add pics, all directly from my phone. Of course I still bring a gps, for where there is no cell signal.

  16. can the gps switch from standard to metric?

  17. @Bakugan01

    On Ebay of course

  18. where can you buy it

  19. @xlr8rzz give it to me then, it will be the best thing i’ve ever got.

  20. holy shit i have a dino just like that i found in a cache today lolz

  21. @xlr8rzz Dont just say it was the worst gift ever! BUt tell us why it was the worst gift ever… That might help the rest of us.

  22. Interesting that you don’t demonstrate the compass navigation screen for geocaching, Many geocachers consider it to be the key tool on a unit for geocaching. It makes it so much easier. Follow the arrow and watch the distance count down.

  23. @BadMuffler You should shut the fuck up and stop telling me what to do. I can talk all I want, and if you don’t like it then press ALT+F4

  24. @xlr8rzz stop whining You should be so lucky to get such an expensive gift. What’s wrong you don’t like going outside? be happy you have parents or a roof over your head … go do your damn chores without being asked while you’re at it .

  25. i got this for my birthday im 14 it was the worst gift i ever got.

  26. I’m in the market for a handheld, saw some good articles on gpssatnavreviews (.) com

  27. can this be used to navigate on a bicycle

  28. Can u get a oregon 400t with a topographic map of europe or is it only for the usa ?!

  29. The antenna is inside the top of the GPS. Very compact, nothing is visible externally, but it can use an external antenna if desired. Chuck Hawley

  30. where is the antenna?I see in the video you have your finger laying accross the top, then when you put it in the palm of your hand your thumb is on the top.

    woosterken

  31. Great review! I will buy one for sure in the coming days!
